I have a female friend here who is experiencing very "creepy behaviour" from her supervisor.

It's quite clear he isn't crossing certain lines and he seems quite devious, from what I've learned. But it's making her uncomfortable and scared and she wants out, not a protracted lawsuit where it might be her word vs his word.

She made it clear she just wants to get out of there and look for a new teaching post.

The problem she faces is that her visa was sponsored by this guy (it's a fairly small company) and of course her ID card has that company's name on it.
She already told him last week that she plans to leave, then the guy said he would cancel her visa and ID card.

Could he do that?
I am 99% sure he can't interfere with her visa, but not so sure about the ID card.

Thanks guys in advance.

Her boss can't do that. It's an empty threat. The visa is hers, and it is valid until the date it expires. She kind find new employment with that visa.

Canuck is right the gaijin card is hers too. It just has the employer's name on it and when she gets a new job, she goes back to city hall and they change it, like they do when you move.
This isn't Korea. We own our visas, employers just sponsor them.

I agree with the others. The visa is hers to keep until it expires. The alien card only has the employer's name on it, and that will change when she finds a new job.

Tell her to find the new job, quit, and then report the guy to the Labor Standards office if she thinks it will do any good. She'll have to have supportive evidence, of course. If she thinks this is not feasible, tell others on discussion forums who the creep is so that others can avoid him, but be clear about what this creepy behavior is.

Hmm seems he is continuing with the scare tactics.

Apparently he said that he will inform the authorities that the conditions of the visa have been broken, if she leaves. Of course thats filled her head with images of men in black knocking on the door. I can sympathise with her.

I can't believe he's being so insistent. What on earth does he hope to gain by threatening the girl??

Grr

Does she not know any Japanese men that could go with her to meet and talk to this jerk? Or at least go to the immigration office with a Japanese person.

If she herself can go to the immigration office, she might try fending off this guy. I don't think immigration will send the guy a nasty letter or give him a phone call, though.

Just tell her to concentrate on working to get that next job. He can do nothing, and his threats about breaking a visa policy are completely empty. She is not doing anything wrong (as far as you have explained).

"I'm going to cancel your visa."
Response: Oh, that's nice.

"I'm going to tell immigration about you violating your visa."
Response: They're such nice people, aren't they?!

It entirely depends on the working context. If it's something like a board of education or private high school or something like that,it's because it looks bad on supervisors if their gaijin quit. It suggests that they cannot control them.
